French state visit update

Buckingham Palace has shared details about the upcoming state visit by French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron.

The Prince and Princess of Wales will have a major role during the state visit.

Summer plans

Like thousands of children across the UK, the Prince and Princess of Wales's kids, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, will soon have the school holidays to look forward to.

The Waleses typically retreat to their Norfolk abode, Anmer Hall, before spending time with the King and Queen during their annual break at Balmoral up in Scotland.

The royal youngsters were last seen publicly as they celebrated Trooping the Colour to mark the King's official birthday in London last month.

Why is the state visit being held in Windsor?

Good question! Traditionally, state visits take place at Buckingham Palace, with the ceremonial elements taking place at Horse Guards Parade down The Mall.

However, due to ongoing refurbishments at Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle has been chosen as the location for the upcoming French state visit.

President Macron's state visit to the UK, from 8 to 10 July, is the first to be hosted at Windsor Castle, rather than Buckingham Palace, in a more than a decade since that of the Irish president Michael D Higgins in 2014.
